Protecting the hydraulic circuit of existing pumped storage schemes

Pumped storage schemes depend on the reliable movement and containment of large volumes of water between interconnected hydraulic structures. Leakage or deterioration in reservoirs, canals, tunnels and shafts can affect water availability, hydraulic efficiency, and operation. Since 1993 Carpi provides rehabilitation expertise across these components, adapting the waterproofing approach to the structure, to the acting loads and to the operational constraints of each scheme.

A wide approach to waterproofing rehabilitation

Rather than treating pumped storage as a single structure, Carpi addresses the specific rehabilitation needs of each component in the water circuit. Waterproofing can be applied to extensive surfaces or local critical areas, with execution planned around outage requirements, reservoir availability and access conditions. The goals are to stop water inflitration and losses, to maintain safe efficient water conveyance, planning works around operational and dewatering constraints.

Rehabilitation across the pumped storage water circuit

A pumped storage scheme can combine several structures with different deterioration mechanisms and hydraulic conditions. Carpi applies structure-specific rehabilitation solutions while maintaining a coordinated waterproofing approach across the scheme.

Existing upper and lower reservoirs may require rehabilitation when concrete or asphalt linings deteriorate, joints or cracks fail, or settlement creates leakage paths. Geomembrane rehabilitation can be total, or limited to critical areas or to failing jonts and cracks.

Where headrace or tailrace canals form part of the scheme, rehabilitation can restore watertightness, bridge cracks and joints and improve hydraulic performance through a smooth lining surface.

Pressure tunnels, free-flow tunnels, surge shafts and chambers can be rehabilitated to stop seepage, protect deteriorated concrete, and reduce hydraulic losses.

Execution conditions

Carpi adapts each rehabilitation project to the operating constraints of the structure, with solutions that can be implemented in dry, underwater or, where applicable, under flowing water conditions.
