Restoring watertightness and hydraulic performance

Environmental aggression and the dynamic action of water deteriorate canals. Through cracks, deteriorated joints and damaged revetments, water leaks into surrounding soils, hydraulic performance decreases due to vegetation growth and progressive deterioration of the canal lining. Carpi rehabilitates existing canals with engineered SIBELON® geomembrane lining systems designed to stop leakage and water losses while improving the long-term hydraulic performance of the waterway.

Rehabilitating canals with minimum operational impact

Depending on the size and condition of the canal and on project constraints, rehabilitation can address the full lining or selected critical areas. A smooth deformable SIBELON® geomembrane lining can bridge joints and large cracks, protect the existing structure, minimise the potential for sinkholes, reduce surface roughness and limit vegetation and algae formation, helping recover hydraulic efficiency while limiting future maintenance. Quick installation, which can also be carried out in stages, reduces outage time.

A rehabilitation strategy adapted to canal conditions

Where deterioration affects extensive areas, a continuous geomembrane lining can restore watertightness across the canal section . The geomembrane liner can be left exposed, maximising hydraulic efficiency, or be partially ballasted if required.

Where leakage is concentrated at specific discontinuities, rehabilitation can target critical joints, cracks or local deteriorated areas rather than the entire canal surface.

When rehabilitation requires a new concrete layer, a smooth geomembrane embedded in the new concrete can help offset the hydraulic impact of the reduced canal cross-section.

Execution conditions

Carpi can adapt canal rehabilitation to dryand, where required, under flowing water conditions, helping reduce disruption to canal operation.
