Extending dam performance through reliable waterproofing

Over time, dams can deteriorate due to ageing, structural movements, environmental exposure, and other factors. Leakage can accelerate this deterioration and affect the long-term performance of the structure. Restoring watertightness is essential to control seepage, protect the asset and extend its service life.

For more than 60 years, Carpi has specialised in the rehabilitation of dams, providing engineered geomembrane waterproofing solutions for concrete, masonry, Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) and embankment dams. Working alongside dam owners, engineering consultants and contractors, Carpi delivers turnkey solutions—from assessment and engineering to manufacturing and installation—tailored to the condition and operational requirements of each structure.

Rehabilitation solutions for every dam type

Concrete
Concrete dams

Carpi rehabilitates concrete dams affected by deterioration due to shrinkage, freeze/thaw cycles, loss of strength under permanent and repeated loading, aggressive water, thermal loading and swelling caused by chemical reactions. Ageing results cracking, joint deterioration, leakage, which increases uplift pressures, reduces stability, and accelerates further deterioration. SIBELON® geomembrane systems provide a continuous waterproof barrier that restores watertightness while protecting the concrete against further deterioration, resisting seismic events, protecting against chemical attack, and assisting in retarding swelling. The systems can be installed across the full upstream face, on critical sections, or to treat specific joints and cracks.

Masonry
Masonry dams

Carpi provides rehabilitation solutions for masonry dams where deteriorated joints in the masonry can create critical paths for water infiltration. SIBELON® geomembrane systems provide a durable waterproof barrier across the affected areas, preventing leakage, protecting the joint sealant from further deterioration, and reducing the need for frequent maintenance, which is on the contrary typical of local repairs .  Anti-puncture geotextiles are used on very aggressive sharp masonry as a cushion to the geomembrane and to minimise surface preparation.

RCC
Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) dams

In RCC dams, thermal cracking, defective contraction joints, and permeable lift joints are the main source of leakage that may result in increased uplift pressures and reduced stability, and may accelerate deterioration of the dam. Carpi rehabilitates RCC dams using exposed drained SIBELON® geomembrane systems to restore watertightness across the upstream face. The system bridges cracks, contraction joints and lift joints while accommodating structural movements, seismic events, and protecting the dam from deterioration. Waterproofing can be limited to critical sections, or to treat failing joints or cracks only.

Embankment
Embankment dams

Carpi develops rehabilitation solutions for embankment dams where  differential settlements, localised deterioration at the connections between the embankment and the appurtenant concrete structures , or  ageing and overstressing of the upstream facing, can create paths for water infiltration. SIBELON® geomembrane systems restore watertightness and provide reliable seepage control, resisting large settlements and seismic events, reducing/preventing formation of uplift pressures, preventing internal erosion and piping or avoiding migration of fines in the core. Exposed or covered configurations are selected according to the existing structure and project requirements, across the full upstream face, or on critical sections, or to treat specific connections. The anchorage systems are designed in function of the subgrade’s characteristics.

Concrete face
Concrete face rockfill dams (CFRDs)

SIBELON® geomembrane rehabilitation solutions for CFRDs address deterioration and leakage affecting the upstream concrete slabs and joints. On concrete facings, anchorage systems are generally like those used in concrete dams. Anti-puncture geotextiles, geogrids, technical woven geotextiles, may be needed on heavily deteriorated facings or at large cavities/discontinuities, to minimise surface preparation or to avoid the geomembrane collapsing into the cavities under the water pressure.

Asphalt
Asphalt concrete face rockfill dams (ACFRDs)

SIBELON® geomembrane solutions for ACFRDs restore watertightness where the existing upstream facing or its connections to concrete appurtenances are deteriorated or failing. The susceptibility of such facings to climate aggression and temperature variations, and their plastic nature, result in a subgrade often irregular and with varying characteristics, requiring an anchorage system designed in function of pull-out resistance.

Rehabilitation solutions for every dam type

SIBELON® geomembrane solutions have been adapted to steel facing and wooden facing rockfill dams, and to earthfill dams, where due to the granular nature of the subgrade deep duckbill anchors were used.
