Rehabilitation constraints

Every rehabilitation project presents different access, water level and operational constraints. Carpi adapts its waterproofing approach accordingly, with bespoke design and special installation techniques and equipment for dry conditions, underwater works and, for specific applications, underwater installation in flowing water.

Dry conditions

When dewatering or temporary shutdown is possible, Carpi can perform rehabilitation works directly on the accessible surface. Depending on the condition of the structure, waterproofing can cover the entire area or target critical sections, joints and cracks.
  • Direct access to critical areas
  • Full or partial waterproofing according to rehabilitation needs
  • Long-term protection against water infiltration
  • Dams
  • Reservoirs
  • Canals
  • Hydraulic tunnels and shafts
  • Joints

Underwater in still water conditions

When emptying a reservoir or hydraulic structure with water not in motion is not feasible due to project constraints (e.g. need to maintain water supply, to avoid loss of power in hydro-electric schemes) or because emptying and refilling of the reservoir can cause problems to the structure, Carpi can perform waterproofing works underwater, avoiding the need for complete dewatering. SIBELON® geomembrane systems can be installed over entire surfaces or only on critical areas, depending on project requirements, and at any depth. Carpi's underwater technologies have been developed since the early 1990s.
  • Reduced need for dewatering
  • Limited disruption to operation
  • Reduced water loss and downtime
  • Dams
  • Reservoirs
  • Joints

Underwater in flowing water

or canals and selected hydraulic applications where water flow cannot be interrupted, Carpi has developed special innovative solutions that allow waterproofing works to be carried out underwater while maintaining the canal in operation. This execution condition is supported by dedicated technologies designed to resist flowing water during installation.
  • Water flow maintained during rehabilitation
  • No shutdown or outage required
  • Reduced impact on infrastructure operation
  • Canals
  • Embankment dams
  • Upstream blanket

Technologies for flowing water conditions

SIBELONMAT®
SIBELONMAT®

SIBELONMAT® is a patented watertight double-geomembrane modular mattress that can be deployed underwater in flowing water. Adjacent mattresses are connected underwater through watertight zippers pre-attached to each mattress, and then filled with ballasting grout, allowing the mattress to remain stable against the dragging force of the water. The bottom SIBELON® geomembrane provides watertightness; the upper SIBELON® geomembrane provides containment for the cement grout preventing water pollution. SIBELONMAT® can be applied to canals, embankment dams and as upstream blanket.

SIBELONZIP®
SIBELONZIP®

SIBELONZIP® is a system designed for canal waterproofing without stopping operation or water flow. The system uses a single watertight SIBELON® geomembrane partially ballasted on site by soil or stones or prebabricated blocks, with adjacent panels connected underwater through pre-attached watertight zippers. Installation can be performed in flowing water without divers.

A solution adapted to each rehabilitation project

The appropriate execution condition depends on the structure, accessibility, water levels, and operational requirements. Carpi combines engineering expertise and special installation capabilities to define the most suitable approach for each project.
