Restoring watertightness where structures move

Joints and cracks are critical paths for leakage in existing hydraulic structures. Their movements can exceed the deformation capacity of conventional embedded waterstops, making durable rehabilitation particularly challenging. Carpi developed external waterstop systems designed to restore watertightness while accommodating significant joint movements under hydraulic loading.

External waterproofing designed for movement

Carpi external waterstops are installed over the existing failing joint or crack, creating a continuous external line of defence against water infiltration, independent from the embedded watestops. Unlike conventional embedded waterstops, the system accommodates movement across a wider flexible waterproofing zone and can be engineered for demanding hydrostatic conditions.

Joint waterproofing for existing structures

Carpi external waterstops  can be applied in dams and in appurtenant structures. Joint behaviour varies with the type of dam, the original construction details, and the movements that develop during operation. Carpi adapts the external waterstop configuration to the structure and to the specific joint or crack requiring rehabilitation.

For existing concrete dams, external waterstops can be used to rehabilitate leaking contraction joints and cracks, providing a flexible waterproof barrier capable of accommodating joints movements.

On CFRDs, external waterstops can rehabilitate joints where slab movements and settlements require a waterproofing system capable of accommodating significant deformation, especially at the pripheral joint.

In RCC dams, rehabilitation can target leaking vertical induced joints, lift joints, cracks and interfaces with conventional concrete elements. External water stops restore the waterproofing function without relying on the performance of the original embedded waterstops.
