Keeping underground infrastructure protected from water infiltration 

Water infiltration can affect the durability, safety, and operation of underground infrastructure. In transport tunnels and other underground structures, unwanted groundwater can damage concrete and affect electrical or electronic equipment. 

Carpi provides geomembrane waterproofing solutions for new underground construction, creating a continuous barrier between the surrounding ground and the protected structure. Applications include transport tunnels as well as underground power facilities, car parks, basements, and storage areas. 

Engineered geomembrane waterproofing for underground construction

In new underground structures, Carpi geomembrane systems can be integrated into the construction layers. Depending on the design, the waterproofing geomembrane can cover the full tunnel cross-section or be configured to manage infiltration together with a drainage system. Besides the watertightness and protection functions, the geomembrane can also provide a barrier against gases or hazardous substances from surrounding ground, reduce deterioration and maintenance and, if combined with an appropriate drainage system, control the effects of water pressure. 

Waterproofing across underground infrastructure

Underground structures face different waterproofing challenges depending on their function, design, and surrounding ground conditions. Carpi develops geomembrane systems tailored to each project, across a wide range of underground infrastructure. 

Depending on groundwater conditions and structural design, Carpi can provide fully tanked waterproofing or drained configurations adapted to the requirements of the underground structure. 

Carpi waterproofing systems can be incorporated into new highway, metro and railway tunnels. The geomembrane forms a water barrier within the tunnel lining system, helping prevent groundwater from reaching the internal structure and equipment. 

The same waterproofing principles can be applied to underground power facilities, caverns, car parks, basements and storage areas where protection against groundwater infiltration is required.
