Adding new functions to the water surface

Reservoirs and ponds can support more than water storage alone. Carpi develops floating geomembrane solutions that protect contained water and can help transform the water surface into a functional part of the infrastructure.

Carpi’s experience covers two complementary applications: SIBELON® geomembrane floating covers for water and environment protection and evaporation control, and floating photovoltaic (PV) applications that use reservoir surfaces to support renewable power generation.

SIBELON® geomembrane floating covers for reservoirs and ponds

SIBELON® geomembrane systems can form watertight floating covers fixed around the perimeter of reservoirs or ponds. The flexible cover follows changes in water level as the reservoir fills and empties, while dedicated ballasts and floats arrangements manage folds and support rainwater drainage.

  • Reduced water evaporation
  • Protection of the contained liquid from dirt and rainwater
  • Protection of the environment by preventing the diffusion of gases and odours in case of stored industrial effluents

Combining water storage and solar energy

Floating photovoltaic (PV) plants use water surfaces to generate renewable electricity without requiring the same land area as ground-mounted solar installations. On reservoirs, floating PV can add a new function to existing or new water infrastructure while the panels also shield part of the water surface from direct sunlight and evaporation.

  • Renewable electricity generation from an existing water surface
  • Reduced use of valuable land
  • Partial reduction of water evaporation
  • Shading that can limit algae growth
  • Potential efficiency benefits from the cooling effect of the water beneath the panels
  • Integration opportunities with hydropower and pumped storage infrastructure
