TUNNELS TRAFFIC
Buried structures, such as highway, subway and railway tunnels, all suffer from a common problem: water infiltration.
Over time, the infiltration may result in increasing humidity to excessive levels inside the space created by the
structure. This humidity and water leakage inside the structure will lead to the spalling of concrete and to formation
of ice stalactites that can be dangerous to the undergoing traffic. Reaction of humidity with the carbon dioxide from
exhausts may furtherly deteriorate the concrete lining, leading to the potential infiltration of undesirable gases or
hazardous chemicals from the surrounding soil.
The installation of a synthetic geomembrane provides the following benefits:
- restores the impermeability of the structure to water
- prevents damage to electrical and electronic services
- creates a barrier to infiltration of gases or hazardous chemicals from the surrounding soil
- controls negative effects of pressure against the structure, when combined with a drainage system.
Since 1963, CARPI geomembrane systems have been installed in highway, subway and railway tunnels.
