Waste products
of man, particularly in advanced technology societies, can be very
hazardous for the environment. Leachates and gases originated by
chemical reactions inside waste products, or chemicals discarded
from the industry, if not properly confined, may seep into the ground,
contaminating the soil and, eventually, the groundwater. Some of
these wastes are also of an extremely, long-time dangerous nature.
The installation
of a synthetic geomembrane as the confinement element in an environment
protection facility provides the following benefits:
- avoids seepage
of leachates into the soil
- isolates hazardous
chemicals
- can confine
polluted areas to avoid further expansion of the phenomenon
- protects
the groundwater
- when used
as a cover can allow reclamation of areas (landfills), or can protect
from contamination of the environment
- has an excellent
durability even when in contact with the most hazardous waste.
The CARPI systems
have been applied to construction of landfills for municipal solid
waste, industrial waste and hazardous waste, to construction of
protection barriers from polluting oils and from polluted waste
waters, to construction of floating covers to isolate pollutants
from the chemical industry.
CARPI's experience
also includes landfills management and control.
