CANALS
Canals have the function of delivering water from the source to the user and as such they are an integral part of many
water resources and hydraulic schemes. Over time, the environment and the dynamic forces of water can deteriorate the
structure. Resultant cracking increases the concrete’s surface roughness and allows infiltration of water into the
surrounding soil. Once this happens, the stability of the structure may be undermined, the water flow will be reduced
through surface roughness, and water loss and vegetation growth may be promoted.
The installation of a very smooth synthetic geomembrane on the canal's inner surface provides the following benefits:
- stops leakage
- bridges joints and even large cracks
- protects the canal structure from further deterioration
- increases the water flow considerably
- reduces formation of vegetation and algae
- minimizes future maintenance
CARPI has successfuly successfully lined all types of canals and water conveyance structures, for both irrigation
and power supply.
After relining with the geomembrane, increases of water flow up to 90% have been documented.
For structural rehabilitation of old canals where new additional concrete is required, a reduction in cross sectional
area may result and therefore water flow will be reduced. Lining of the new concrete with a lower frictional resistance
CARPI lining system can compensate for the narrowing of the section.
CARPI linings can even be installed in operating conditions, depending on the velocity of water flow.
